What is iEARN?
The mission of the International Education and Resource Network (iEARN) is to enable young people worldwide, working in collaboration and dialogue, to make a meaningful contribution to the health and welfare of the planet and its people.
This is accomplished by connecting classrooms around the world - Educators and students work together on meaningful projects and communicate through iEARN’s safe and secure online Collaboration Centre.
When we here at KIDS learned about iEARN, we knew there was no better home for us! It has allowed us to take our program and materials to a truly global audience, and at the same time, to allow students to connect and learn from one another as they seek to put an end to the root causes of Hunger, Poverty, and Inequality.
The History of iEARN
iEARN has been using online technologies to link schools internationally since 1988 (keep in mind that this pre-dates wide use of the internet).
In that year, the Copen Family Foundation, under the leadership of Peter Copen, linked 12 schools in Moscow with 12 schools in New York State in a pioneering demonstration that education can be enhanced and the quality of life on the planet improved if young people are given the opportunity to collaborate on meaningful educational projects.
Based on that successful project work, iEARN opened its network worldwide and is now active in more than 40,000 schools and youth organizations in over 130 countries.
